The Papal Palace and Place du Palais
Standing opposite the Rhône, the Papal Palace is one of the largest Gothic palaces in Europe, residence of the popes in the 14th century. Visiting the great halls, climbing to the terrace for a vertiginous view: the place commands admiration. Below, Place du Palais, lined with cafés, is ideal for a pause that extends the conversation.
On the Pont d’Avignon
On the Pont d’Avignon they dance, so the little song says, and it still raises a smile; but the Pont Saint-Bénézet and its tiny Saint-Nicolas chapel, suspended above the Rhône, remain a devilishly romantic setting. From the Rocher des Doms garden just above, the view over the bridge, Villeneuve-lès-Avignon and Mont Ventoux opens wide: a perfect frame for a first date.
Festival and Avignon nights
Every July, the Avignon Festival turns the city into a giant stage: the Cour d’Honneur, the Cloître des Carmes and a Fringe spilling into the streets. All year round, Place de l’Horloge and the surrounding lanes keep the evenings lively. On Lyad, members from the Vaucluse share their favourite spots, from the centre to Villeneuve; it is up to you to find someone to dance with in your turn.
